Vintage Trunk Makeover

Blind faith…that is what this project is going to be…usually I have pictures, tutorials, all sorts of info when I jump into a project to help me out..this time I think I will take it step by step and see where it takes me…
The project-transform this trunk into a coffee table…

Must keep:
  1. the initials B.H. on the end –ironically BOTH of my parents initials.
  2. the paper stamps/info sheets-torn and tattered-but they show dates and destinations…..anyone have ANY idea on how to cover them with some sort of protectant that wont damage the paper and the ink --but also protect them from wear and tear?
 The beginning process:
The wood strips across the top
started cleaning old spattered paint off the top 4 wood strips with Sol u Mel & it worked great and now am doing a complete cleaning of the 4 strips with good ol Murphy’s………

Concentrate only on the 4 wood slats….That is what I have cleaned so far….also fyi the trim strips going up and down are leather-will start working on them tonight…the stuff on the lower right hand corner—you can somewhat see the paper under what looks like paint spill-that is one of the travel stamps—that reads  New York 1951—MUST KEEP!!  The brown areas between the wood and leather is canvas covering painted brown—canvas and paint look original….

That’s my update for tonight…….suggestions are welcome  being prayed for!!
