Vintage Stamp Auction Find

I could stare at this vintage stamp all day long....









Is it the great wood handle that has perfectly worn patina.....

or the identifying letter A that draws me in................

I want to know....what was it used for and where?

 I'm not sure -- but I am thrilled to have picked it up at an auction this week....

only wish I had B-Z.......
